So, what is the entrepreneurial spirit?
Well, the word entrepreneur to me means personal accountability, personal responsibility, and independence. The “I don't need the government or anything else to take care of me” mindset. I am betting on myself. An innovator, a source of ideas, maybe they don't quite fit in, often challenges the status quo. Entrepreneurs are really encouraged to act on their values. To me, it doesn't mean you have to own a company to be an entrepreneur, it's just having that entrepreneurial spirit.
So, what is spirit?
Spirit, to me, is the nonphysical part of us, the emotion, the character, the soul. Something out there in the universe that we are tapping into, or something in our head or our hearts that we are tapping into.
So the entrepreneurial spirit is the combination of the two.
Why do we need the entrepreneurial spirit?
Freedom
Transformation
To live a great f’ing life
Freedom is that I can speak however I want, I can choose to do what I want, I can go wherever I want and I don't need anyone else's approval to do so. Freedom to live.
Transformation is to keep improving. Improve on the past, improve as a leader, improve as a person, improve as a society. To fill in the gaps. So, if there is something missing that is why we need the entrepreneurial spirit. To be an innovator and think of new ideas and problem solve. It's really to learn.
To live a great f’ing life is to have fulfillment. Life is magical, we only live it once (or so we think). So why not love every day and enjoy it, look forward to it and keep learning in order to feel fulfilled and be at peace.
How do we use and be the entrepreneurial spirit? Think. Act. Be.
To think is to fanatically schedule a time to tap into yourself and hear yourself think. Ask yourself what is going on inside your head and your heart. There are numerous ways to do this such as meditation, the Take 5 Check-in, or even having a great conversation. It's just to think about what matters most to you, clarify who you are, and follow your North Star. Why am I here? What is my beacon?
As I think, I begin to prioritize and I can start to act. To act is to jump, leap, or act on those things you’ve prioritized as what matters most. So, to have the courage to act. Instead of just doing the urgent things, it is acting on the important things around what matters most, who I am, and why I am here.
To be is to be who you are. Too often, if I am worried about the future or thinking about the past, therefore I am not impacting the moment and being present. I like to let my freak flag fly and just say “this is who I am” and maybe not everyone likes that, and that's ok as long as I am being true to who I am.
In conclusion, Joseph Campbell said, “jump, it’s not that far”. I can put my ladder against the wall, climb to the top and realize that maybe I’m not on the right ladder. I know that I can jump off and find the right one because the spirit will take care of me. I will survive and I will thrive.
I am proud to be an American based on what the founding fathers did. They had that entrepreneurial spirit and didn't want to be controlled so they took risks and had the courage. They jumped. Now is a critical time in the world and in all of our lives to make a choice.
Do we want to be taken care of, or do we want to live that great life? That doesn't mean it's easy. It's a great time to be alive.
