Let’s talk about intentionality.
I’ve often gone through life just winging it and being spontaneous, that works in a lot of ways, and yet I’ve found that when I have intention things work out more positively. I try to have intentionality around any upcoming meeting or conversation I’m having, for the day and for my life. I find that putting forth intention often allows me to take a step back or go to the next level. Joe Jackson had a song that said “you can’t get what you want if you don’t know what you want”.
So, what are three ways to create intentionality for a situation?
#1 - Call it forth
#2 - Gratitude
#3 - Write it down
First, Calling it forth is picturing what that looks like at the end. For an upcoming conversation, I may wonder if it’s going to be a positive or negative one, I need to call it forth and say what the outcome will be. I may not know exactly how it’s going to happen but at the end of that conversation we’re going to smile, we’re going to hug, and we’re going to have a connection.
The second is gratitude. As I’m about to start my day or go into a situation in my life I need to be grateful for everything that I already have. I need to be grateful for what’s coming to me and for the past that I had. I wouldn’t be who I am and where I am without the past. I take a couple of minutes to be grateful for everything that I have and know that this day is awesome.
The third is to write it down. As Les Brown says, “any worthy goal written down and shared is bound to happen”. So write it down and share it. For a meeting, I may write down that I’m grateful for this person and write down what the intention really is for this meeting; to make progress and/or make a decision. For the day it’s what are the three things that matter most today, what are my top three action items, and if it were up to me what am I calling forth on this day; write it down and share it. (Click here to learn more about the 331 check-in!) Ultimately to have a safe space to share is where the lessons really are and you’re able to tap into that wisdom. It may even be that I’m doing an audio recording and that I won’t share with anyone else, but I’m sharing it with myself in my head and in my heart.
Call it forth, be grateful, write it down, and share it.
Have an intention for today, for an experience, for an encounter I’m going to have, and for your life. It’s worth it.
